Steps to Prepare Homemade Dahl

Hey everyone, it’s Drew, welcome to my recipe site. Today, we’re going to prepare a special dish, dahl. One of my favorites food recipes. This time, I will make it a little bit tasty. This is gonna smell and look delicious.

Dahl is one of the most popular of recent trending meals on earth. It is simple, it’s quick, it tastes yummy. It’s appreciated by millions every day. Dahl is something that I have loved my entire life. They’re nice and they look wonderful.

To begin with this recipe, we have to first prepare a few ingredients. You can have dahl using 15 ingredients and 8 steps. Here is how you can achieve it.

The ingredients needed to make Dahl:
  1. Take 500 g Yellow Spilt Peas
  2. Make ready 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  3. Take 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  4. Get 2 cinnamon sticks (2 inches long)
  5. Prepare 1 green chilli pepper (can be hot or mild depending on preference)
  6. Prepare 2 medium sized onions
  7. Make ready 8 garlic cloves
  8. Prepare 2 tablespoons fresh minced ginger (or 2 teaspoons of powdered ginger)
  9. Make ready 1 tablespoon fresh minced turmeric (or 1 teaspoon on powdered ginger)
  10. Take 20 cardamom pods
  11. Make ready 1 teaspoon paprika
  12. Take 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
  13. Make ready 2 medium tomatoes
  14. Get 1 Lemon, juiced
  15. Prepare leaves Coriander (for garnish)
Instructions to make Dahl:
  1. Add 2.5 Litres of water to the Yellow Split peas and boil for 10 minutes. Reduce to simmer and cook for a further 40 minutes. The split peas should now be quite soft.
  2. Dice the onions to make very small pieces. mince the chili pepper and mince the garlic cloves. If using fresh,, mince the ginger and turmeric
  3. Take the cardamom pods and use a mortar and pestle to crush the pods. Take the seeds out and discard the pods as they are not edible. Now crush the seeds into powder. You need about 1 teaspoon of the powder
  4. Heat the oil in a medium skillet over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and the cinnamon sticks and cook for 60 -120 seconds until fragrant.
  5. Add the onion, green chili, garlic and ginger (if using fresh) and turmeric (if using fresh) and cook for 4 -5 minutes until onions are turning translucent.
  6. Add the turmeric (if dry), ginger (if dry), cardamom, paprika, slat and tomatoes to the pan and cook until the tomatoes start to fall apart (about 2-3 minutes). Discard the cinnamon stick.
  7. Drain the yellow split peas well. Stir in the spiced onion mixture and add lemon juice and some water to make it a bit thinner. Bring to simmer. Taste and add salt if necessary. Now use a normal blender or immersion blender to make the split peas into a thick dahl.
  8. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve
